Autonomous Robotic ATV - Phase 1 - "RC vehicle" (Hi-def)

UNC Charlotte is working on an autonomous All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) that can sense its environment and traverse most any terrain. It will follow a pre-defined path pulling a trailer that has sensing equipment. Phase 1 is to build the mechanical and electrical systems to allow someone to drive the vehicle like an RC car (later we will replace the RC controller with computer control). As you can see from the video, it works! It is an off-the-shelf Honda ATV. We collected Video, LIDAR and GPS data as well which we will integrate later. Google Tech Talk October 8, 2010 Presented by Jason Grigsby. ABSTRACT John Battelle recently wrote, "Mobile. It's on everyone's lips, but no one knows what the hell to do about it." You don't have to look very far to find examples that prove his point. Over the last year, Jason Grigsby has been collecting examples of where companies are making mistakes when it comes to their mobile strategies and desperately seeking examples of those who get it. In this presentation, Jason will talk about the DOs and DONTs of mobile strategy. Learn from both the outstanding success and cringe-worthy failures of others as you begin to formulate your plans for navigating the mobile landscape. Finally, we'll look at methods for evaluating mobile strategies based on demographics, mobile context, and the unique characteristics of mobile devices. Jason Grigsby was one of the project leads on the Obama iPhone Application and helped design the user inferface for the Wall Street Journal's Blackberry application. He founded and organizes Mobile Portland, a local mobile group. Jason is a co-founder of Cloud Four, a small start-up focused on mobile and web development. If you've ever been involved with vehicle separation testing you might have experienced problems when trying to interpret the large amounts of data generated. Its all very well having a mass of information on various distances, angles, and speeds, but interpreting this information usefully is often difficult. As development of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) becomes more commonplace, the methods used to develop vehicle separation systems become more advanced, leading to a need for methods that can manipulate data usably and intuitively. Responding to this, Racelogic have developed simple to use, dedicated vehicle separation functionality for its industry proven VBOX 3, which affords ADAS developers the capability to verify the accuracy of their systems effectively. Real-time vehicle separation data can be viewed in the local vehicle whilst being logged for analysis; and can also be transmitted via CAN for use by third-party systems. This feature enables the information to be seen in a more meaningful way, and by connecting a Video VBOX to the system it is even possible to observe vehicle and driver behaviour integrated with the data in a real environment. Using the CAN output, the vehicle separation data can be graphically overlaid over video, in real-time. Berkeley press release: Union City, Calif. -- Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Nokia today (Friday, Feb. 8) tested technology that could soon transform the way drivers navigate through congested highways and obtain information about road conditions. In the unprecedented field experiment, transportation researchers tested the feasibility of using GPS-enabled mobile phones to monitor real-time traffic flow while preserving the privacy of the phones' users. One hundred vehicles were deployed onto a 10-mile stretch of I-880 between Hayward and Fremont for seven hours in the experiment, dubbed "Mobile Century" and primarily funded by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). Each car was equipped with a Nokia N95 mobile phone that ran special software to periodically send anonymous speed readings from the integrated GPS to servers that then computed traffic conditions. Information was displayed on the Internet, allowing viewers to visualize traffic in real time. An independent tracking feature allowed the command center set up in Union City to track the position of the cars to coordinate the experiment and ensure the safety of the participants. Using the GPS data to estimate prevailing speeds and travel times, researchers were able to obtain a picture of real-time traffic conditions.
