Crash for cash caught on RoadHawk camera system

This is a potential "Crash for Cash" caught on camera. A lorry driver was going about his daily business when the car in front suddenly brakes causing him to collide in to the back of him. On later inspection the insurance company involved deemed the video to be suspect and handed it over to the Police. After a long investigation the police have busted a huge crash for cash ring involving over 120 incidents in the last year, possibly totalling more than £3m of insurance fraud! This clearly demonstrates the advantage of having a RoadHawk forward facing GPS black box video camera recorder to your vehicle. Police believe this to be a "decoy rear end shunt" two cars are involved. Watch the video carefully. When the lorry driver pulls in to the left hand lane the Mercedes closes the gap between itself and the car in front. The VW Golf makes a sudden turn causing the Merc to brake hard. The Golf is used as a decoy to give the Merc the excuse of having to stop quickly.

Stanford Automotive, part II: The future of autonomous cars

Last week at the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS), we looked at a car designed to study vehicle dynamics. Today, we get a look at how engineers and computer scientists are building cars that don't need drivers—and are better for it. Mike Sokolsky is a research engineer in the artificial intelligence lab at Stanford. He works as a systems integrator for "Junior," Stanford's car that tests computer vision, decision-making, and probabilistic planning. "If you think about a GPS device, right now you can plug in a place and it tells you how to get there," says Sokolsky. "The extension that we want to get to is, you plug in a place, and it takes you there. That's the interface that we want, ultimately, to be able to interact with our cars: sit back, relax, and it takes care of all the driving for you." What they're working on now at CARS is taking the autonomous car from the test environment to real roads, with real problems and lots of unknowns, like construction. "You can't rely on the roads being the same every time you come back. You have to be able to adapt to all these changing situations," says Sokolsky. While the interior of Junior looks pretty much like a normal car, the trunk of the car looks like a miniature data center. But computers in back are nothing special, says Sokolsky: "We've put a lot of effort into making sure that the software we write is scalable, and works sort of incrementally, so you don't need to worry about massive data. The green B subway line has the most unpredictable arrival times due to many traffic lights, frequent station stops and a high passenger volume. According to passengers who use the majority of the system, the B line is deemed the most inconvenient because the passengers have no information on arrival times. The MBTA has no plans of addressing this problem. The T-NAV prototype will provide MBTA passengers with accurate, easily accessible online arrival information about the subway B line cars between all its stops, in both directions. The T-NAV prototype will utilize a community of users with Java compatible GPS enabled cell phones who use the B line to provide the rest of the community with accurate train arrival times. The system can be scaled to the entire Boston subway system. 1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz- Candy Apple Red & In Near-Mint Condition!

Long gone are the days when GM could produce works of art such as this vintage 1978 Cadillac Eldorado! Now, in 2009, GM is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Ok, granted, building huge tanks like this 78 Eldorado may not have been the wisest decision GM ever made, but, alas, these cars are a part of our history & heritage. Right or wrong, GM DID make these cars, and in the late 70's, people LOVED them! Certainly GM could have redeemed itself if it had pressed on with it's electric car program in the 90's. Perhaps it wouldn't be in the situation it finds itself in today if it had continued on with the program. Not familiar with GM's electric car? Oh, it definitely DID exist- for a short brief period- until GM pulled the plug! Look for EV1 videos on YouTube, or look for the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?" at your local library, or on ebay (I think that's the correct title). The EV1 stood for Electric Vehicle 1 (the prototype that GM had developed and was testing out west in the late 90's) It's doubtful we will ever see such classy vehicles as these older Cadillacs gliding down the freeway, almost effortlessly, and entirely gracefully. The vehicle shown in this video is one from my private collection. It's only got 33900 original miles, and the condition of the vehicle accentuates this low mileage figure. Autonomous Robotic ATV - Phase 1 - "RC vehicle" (Hi-def)

UNC Charlotte is working on an autonomous All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) that can sense its environment and traverse most any terrain. It will follow a pre-defined path pulling a trailer that has sensing equipment. Phase 1 is to build the mechanical and electrical systems to allow someone to drive the vehicle like an RC car (later we will replace the RC controller with computer control). As you can see from the video, it works! It is an off-the-shelf Honda ATV. We collected Video, LIDAR and GPS data as well which we will integrate later.
